INTRODUCTION:
Would you know what psalms psalms to recite for specific situations most of us face during some period in our life—times when prayer is especially warranted or needed. This page lists a number of common situations when we seek—sometimes desperately—assistance from God, and the psalm(s) most appropriate...And while there is no reason why you cannot appeal to God directly in your own language, the psalms provide a powerful spiritual/psychological resource. But however you express yourself, you can trust God to understand your own unique situation!

ELEMENTS OF PRAYER
Below we review some of the major factors that will help you engage God. But first, did you know there are about 150 instances recorded in the Old Testament in which an individual, group, a nation prayed to God for something pecific and that 90 percent of the time He granted their petition. See the details in God is Good.

Surprising to most, it only proves how beneficent God is. And while recognizing God sometimes says “No,” the following will help increase the odds of God accepting your prayer.

1. First and foremost, your prayer must be sincere. It should be heartfelt and not mechanical. The latter is not likely to engage God.

2. Needless to say, it should not be , but relate to something crucial in your or another’s life. One would hardly expect God to answer someone’s prayer to win the lottery. Likewise, praying for a football team to win a game—whether you bet on it or not—is hardly what prayer or psalms are meant for. (Although if actually a participant in a sporting event, it is not unreasonable to ask God to grant that no one on either team gets injured and that God help you to perform to the best of your ability.)

3. Prayer should be repeated daily, as long as necessary. Persistency counts; a one time prayer is unlikely to be answered. Thus, Hannah who was barren prayed years for a child before God granted her wish. But when He did, she gave birth to Samuel—one of the greatest prophets in the O.T.! (I Samuel 1:1)

4. Particularly important, you should do something tangible in conjunction with your petition. Give charity; improve your behavior; become kinder and more patient with others; resolve to get rid of a bad habit.

5. Finally, it goes without saying, that the more righteous you are, the better chance your prayer will be answered. And righteousness can be easily defined: it is simply “clean hands and a pure heart.” Say what you mean, mean and do what you say, and do not try to beat the system (such as cheating at taxes) even if everyone around you does and tells you it is OK. Psalm 35 lists the major elements that make a righteous man or woman. Follow its road map and dramatically increase the likelihood God will respond to you!
